The proposed railway corridor is expected to transform connectivity across some of the most remote regions of Himachal Pradesh and Ladakh. More importantly, the project has strategic significance because it would provide an all-weather rail link towards Leh, a region where road connectivity can be severely affected by snowfall, landslides and extreme weather conditions.

A Railway Line Through the Heart of the Himalayas

The massive cost is largely understandable when the geography of the route is considered. Hundreds of kilometres of tunnels, major bridges, access roads and other supporting infrastructure will be required.

Government information indicates that the project would involve approximately 270 kilometres of tunnels. This means that more than half of the proposed railway alignment could be underground, making tunnelling technology one of the central components of the project.

Connecting Mandi, Manali, Keylong and Leh

One of the most significant aspects of the proposed railway is the number of important Himalayan locations that could receive direct rail connectivity.
