Rohtang Pass or Rohtang Top is at a distance of approximately 25 kilometers from Manali via road and the distance between Kullu and Manali via road is 40 kilometers. It connects Kullu-Manali to Lahaul & Spiti, this was the only way to go to the beautiful Lahaul & Spiti valley from Manali via road, But now after 3rd October Atal Tunnel in Rohtang is another way to go to Lahoul & Spiti valley from Manali. Rohtang pass top is at approx. 13000 ft height from the sea level.
Unpredictable weather in the form of snowstorms and blizzards makes Rohtang pass the top difficult to cross on foot or through vehicles.
As a visitor or tourist, there are mainly Rohtang Pass and Solang Valley the two places where people can enjoy snowfall in the winter season, Rohtang Pass is the only place where you can find snow even in May-June month every year. Solang Valley can be a good option to have fun with snow in the winter season.
The military significance of NH-21 Manali-Leh highway needs to keep it
open for the entire year, Indian government has begun building an 8.5 km long Rohtang Tunnel in 2010 to bypass the Rohtang pass top. This will help to get Kullu-Manali connected the entire year with Keylong, Lahaul, Spiti, and Leh in Ladakh through NH-21. This tunnel will also shorten the Manali-Leh distance by about 50 kilometers and will also reduce the travel time by 4 hours approximately. It will take only about 30 minutes to cross the Rohtang pass if you travel through the
Rohtang tunnel.
Today is Friday, December 28th, 2018, and the Rohtang pass tunnel is almost completed but right now it is not open for public convenience. I am from Kullu itself and hope this tunnel to be opened soon for public convenience. Meanwhile, for the people of Lahaul & Spiti, the only convenience during the snow season in winter is to travel via helicopter where government-subsidized tickets are available for the people of Lahaul and Spiti valley only. Though the life of the people of Lahaul and Spiti is very hard, still they have managed and are managing these things.
It was a very good experience for me 2-3 years back when I enjoyed my Solang Valley visit and the Manali Winter Carnival together.
When Rohtang pass will open now for tourists this year :
For 2024-2025, the Rohtang pass top is still closed to tourists officially. Rohtang Pass top will remain closed to tourists due to bad weather conditions.Rohtang Pass opening date 2024 for tourists: Jun-2024 (Dates may vary according to the weather conditions So please do confirm before planning to visit here).
